چکیده

[1] Total alkalinity (AT) was measured during the Meteor 51/2 cruise, crossing the Mediterranean Sea from west to east. AT concentrations were high ( 2600 mmol kg ) and alkalinity-salinity-correlations had negative intercepts. These results are explained by evaporation coupled with high freshwater AT inputs into coastal areas. Salinity adjustment of AT revealed excess alkalinity throughout the water column compared to mid-basin surface waters. Since Mediterranean waters are supersaturated with respect to calcite and aragonite, the excess alkalinity likely reflects alkalinity inputs to coastal areas close to regions of deep and intermediate water formation. An alkalinity budget shows that main alkalinity inputs come from the Black Sea and from rivers, whereas the Strait of Gibraltar is a net sink. The major sink appears to be carbonate sedimentation. The basin-average net calcification rate and CaCO3 sedimentation was estimated to be 0.38 mol m 2 yr . The estimated residence time of AT is 160 yr. Citation: Schneider, A., D. W. R. Wallace, and A. Spatiotemporal variability of alkalinity in the Mediterranean Sea

The paper provides a basin-scale assessment of the spatiotemporal distribution of alkalinity in the Mediterranean Sea. The assessment is made by integrating the available observations into a 3-D transport–biogeochemical model. The results indicate the presence of complex spatial patterns: a marked west-to-east surface gradient of alkalinity is coupled to secondary negative gradients: (1) from m...

The CO2 system in the Mediterranean Sea: a basin wide perspective

The Mediterranean Sea (MedSea) is considered a “laboratory basin” being an ocean in miniature, suffering dramatic changes in its oceanographic and biogeochemical conditions derived from natural and anthropogenic forces. Moreover, the MedSea is prone to absorb and store anthropogenic carbon due to the particular CO2 chemistry and the active overturning circulation. Despite this, water column CO2...

High anthropogenic carbon content in the eastern Mediterranean

[1] This work presents data of dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC‐12), dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity from a cruise to the Mediterranean Sea during October– November 2001, with the main focus on the CFC‐12 data and on the eastern basin. Using the transit time distribution method, the anthropogenic carbon concentrations in the basin were estimated. Results were cross‐checked with a ba...

Some properties reproductive of the speckled shrimp (Metapenaeus monoceros Fabricius, 1798) in the North-eastern Mediterranean

Speckled shrimp (Metapenaeus monoceros), is a commercially important prawn in the embayments and estuaries of the Mediterranean Sea. It is originally a Lessepsian species which had migrated from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. This study was carried out in the North-eastern Mediterranean Sea between November 2009 and October 2010 with monthly sampling of speckled ...
